CEO of St. Nicholas Hospice receives MBE
Dr Barbara Gale, CEO of St. Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours for 2019. The award is in recognition of her contribution to not only hospice care itself but also the West Suffolk community. Dr. Gale, who has been at the helm of St. Nicholas Hospice Care for the last eleven years, masterminded the Hospice Neighbours network. Hospice Neighbours is a community based, volunteer led scheme which supports people at home who have life-limiting conditions. The scheme offers both practical support in the way of shopping, gardening, dog walking as well as vital companionship.
Dr. Gale told the Newmarket Journal that she was ‘astounded’ when she received the news and said ‘I feel privileged and humbled to think that I am worthy of this award and I thank the people that took the time to nominate me.’ Dr. Gale also said ‘I couldn’t have received this without such an amazing team’ and she praised all of the staff and volunteers involved who ‘work so hard to make the experiences of people in the community better and help people as they face death, dying and grief.’
Dr. Gale completed her Masters in Hospice Leadership in 2010 and is now in her final year of a PhD in Palliative Care at Lancaster University. Her thesis explores the stories of community hospice volunteers who are working with people at the end of life. Dr. Gale is currently implementing a strategy for St Nicholas Hospice Care that focuses on delivering an open access service to all.
