Our Special Friends is an amazing organisation which enables people to continue to benefit from animal companionship during illness, bereavement or other crises.
They are primarily based in West Suffolk and Thetford but they are keen to expand as funding allows. Our Special Friends work to keep vulnerable people and their pets together; they can provide dog walking and offer accompanied walks using their own volunteers or those from affiliated organisations. Our Special Friends can also bring pat dogs to people who are unable to keep a dog themselves but who would still benefit from animal companionship. They look for ways to reduce costs such as vet bills and can offer advice on respite care, fostering and re-homing to help people make informed choices about the future.
Our Special Friends work in partnerships with other organisations such as St Nicholas Hospice Neighbour Scheme and other befriending or community groups. They can take referrals from organisations and people can also self-refer. They have a contact form on their website and once they have received a referral they will undertake an assessment initially over telephone or email, with a follow up visit if this is required.
Our Special Friends was set up by Belinda Johnston who is passionate about enabling vulnerable people to benefit from animal companionship during difficult times. The ethos of Our Special Friends is to recognise, respect and encourage the lifeline that pets can provide to people. A lifeline which needs to be valued, especially for those who are ill, vulnerable or isolated.
