Steel Bones is a voluntary charity supporting civilian amputees and their families. Husband and wife team, Leigh and Emma Joy-Staines founded the charity, after their own experience of Leigh having his leg amputated at the age of twenty-five. Steel Bones aims to seek out and support new amputees and their families, providing the guidance and companionship they need at what can be an incredibly traumatic time. Founder Trustee Emma Joy-Staines told us
‘ There are 55000 new amputees in the UK each year so it is in need. We send out support packs, children’s books and we have amputee teddy bears that we send out which mirror the child or parent amputee.’ Emma goes on to stress that ‘It is about working with the whole family; looking at the trauma amputation can have on the family and helping them to overcome that. The most important thing to us is that no amputee family feels lonely and they know we are there to help them at whatever point they need.’
The charity runs various activities in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire including a weekly Fitness Club at Inspire Gym in Mildenhall (Sundays from 1-2pm) and their own Cambridge United Amputee Football Team who train every Thursday 8.30-9.30pm at Bottisham Village College. Steel Bones also organises workshops in schools across the county through their ‘Limbitless Games’ venture to help raise awareness of and support children of amputee families.
Here at Suffolk Carers Matter we have a close working relationship with Steel Bones who have been referring families to us for additional support. They are a great organisation to work with and we are continually impressed by their passion and dedication. Steel Bones said of the collaboration with SCM: ‘We love working with Suffolk Carers Matter. We refer families because we know they will offer the very best advice, attention and signposting. A wonderful organisation with people who do what they say which gives us real peace of mind. ‘
